Our services have been recognized as among the best in the nation, with notable awards and recognitions testifying to our ongoing commitment to high quality, patient-centered care.

The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods has consistently earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for hospital accreditation. The Joint Commission is one of the most respected healthcare accreditation services in the nation and the Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.

The Joint Commission’s standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients, helping health care organizations measure, assess and improve performance. Surveyors also conduct onsite observations and interviews every 3 years.

These reviewers evaluate compliance with hospital accreditation standards spanning several areas such as facility operations, environment of care, emergency management processes, patient safety initiatives, infection prevention and control, leadership responsibilities, medication management, and patient rights and responsibilities.

The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods recently received national recognition for a five out of five-star excellent overall rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Southwoods is the only hospital in the Mahoning Valley to earn this rating as of July 31, 2023.

In April 2015, CMS added HCAHPS ratings to its Hospital Compare website as part of the initiative to add 5-star quality ratings. CMS assigns star ratings to U.S. hospitals annually based on their performance across five quality categories: safety of care, mortality, patient experience, readmission rates and timely and effective care.

CMS hosts the Care Compare website, where facilities in a given area are compared side-by-side. This user friendly tool helps consumers and their family members get objective information about providers in their region so they can make informed decisions about their healthcare.

Patient Experience for Inpatient & HCAHPS

The Surgical Hospital at Southwoods has been named a 2022 Human Experience (HX) Guardian of Excellence Award® winner by Press Ganey. This award is part of Press Ganey’s annual ranking of the top hospitals and health systems in the country, according to performance in patient experience.

The hospital is in the top 5% of healthcare providers in delivering patient experience in the last year. Very few health systems achieve this threshold and consistently maintain it for the one-year reporting period. Southwoods has received this award every year since its inception in 2013.

Patient Experience for Inpatient & HCAHPS

Press Ganey also honored the hospital with the 2022 Human Experience (HX) Pinnacle of Excellence Award® for maintaining high levels of excellence for at least three consecutive years in patient experience. This award is highly competitive and specifically recognizes top-performing healthcare organizations nationwide who meet a number of criteria including teamwork, likelihood to recommend and overall rating.

Southwoods is one of only six hospitals in Ohio and one of only 96 nationwide to receive this award, and has received it every year since its inception in 2016.

We believe these awards reflect the staff’s dedication to a positive patient experience and are further evidence that today’s healthcare consumer places tremendous value not only on the overall quality of healthcare services, but also on being treated in a kind and compassionate manner by their caregivers.
