Testicular Cancer Awareness Month: What Men Should Know

April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month — a reminder that men’s health deserves attention year-round, not just in June (International Men’s Health Month) or November (Men’s Health Month). According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 9,800 new cases of testicular cancer will be diagnosed in 2026, and incidence rates in the U.S. continue to rise. About 1 in every 250 men will be affected in their lifetime.

Unlike many cancers, testicular cancer tends to strike younger men. The average age at diagnosis is 33, making it one of the most common cancers in men between their 20s and 40s. The good news? When caught early, it’s also one of the most treatable. Regular self-exams — similar to the monthly checks women are encouraged to do for breast cancer — can make a real difference.

Know the Signs

Early detection starts with knowing what to look for. Common symptoms include:

  • A lump, swelling or pain in the testicle
  • Breast tenderness or growth
  • Early puberty in boys

If the cancer has spread, symptoms may also include:

  • Low back pain
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • A persistent cough
  • Stomach pain
  • Headaches or confusion

If you notice any of these symptoms — or something just doesn’t feel right — don’t ignore it. Getting checked is a simple step that can give you clarity and peace of mind.

When to See a Urologist

Urologists specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions of the urinary tract and male reproductive system, including the kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra. If something feels off, a urologist is a good place to start.
